Introduction

The National Institute for Occupational Health and Poison Control, Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (NIOHP, China CDC) was established in 1954. It was originally named Labor Health Research Institute of Central Health Research Academy (renamed China Academy of Medical Sciences in 1956), which is the first professional academic institution for Labor Health and Occupational Disease Control and Prevention sponsored by the central government. It became affiliated to Chinese Center for Preventive Medicine in 1983, renamed Chinese Academy of Preventive medical Sciences in 1985, then changed to National Institute of Occupational Health and Poison Control, Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention in December 2001. 

The institute is also well-known as the National Center for Occupational Health and Occupational Disease Control and Prevention, the Chemical Toxicity Tests Center of the Ministry of Health, National Base for Treatment and Cure of Chemical Poisoning, and World Health Organization Collaborating Center for Occupational Health. The Institute is authorized to confer master and PhD degree students on occupational and environmental health, and toxicology, and also authorized as a post-doctoral research station. some of important national academic committees in the fields of occupational health and toxicity are affiliated to the institute, such as National Occupational Health Standard Professional Committee, Labor Health and Occupational Disease Branch of China Preventive Medicine Association, and Occupational Diseases Professional Committee, Industrial Toxicology Specialty Section of the Chinese Society of Toxicology, Occupational Health Special Committee of China Occupational Safety and Health Association, Enterprises Committee of China Association of Health Promotion and Education, and Occupational Health Professional Committee of China Health Inspection Association. In 1998, the institute was qualified class A by the State Bureau of Technical Supervision on chemical toxicity identification and occupational disease hazard assessment. 

The institute has 130 staff members, including 119 professionals (58 senior professionals). The working fields cover occupational health, occupational medicine, poison control, industrial toxicology, etc. The institute includes professional departments, such as Department of Occupational Epidemiology and Risk Assessment, Department of Physical and Chemical Risk Assessment, Department of Occupational Health Protection and Ergonomics, Department of Women Labor Health and Reproductive Health, Department of Health Promotion and Occupational Stress, Department of Occupational Disease Surveillance and Policy Research, Department of Occupational Health Standard, Department of Occupational Respiratory Diseases, Department of Biomarkers and Molecular Epidemiology, Department of Toxicology, Department of Poison Control, etc. 

For recent years, following the mission of the institution to develop new knowledge in the field of occupational health and to transfer that knowledge into practice. We have conducted a series of research projects on occupational disease control and prevention. Up to now, it has made great achievement in prevention and treatment of pneumoconiosis, control of pesticide poison, control of occupational poison, health toxicology, surveillance of occupational health, standards for occupational health and occupational diseases and so on, which has contributed greatly to the prevention and cure of occupational diseases in China.
